It's not like, greatest show ever material, but surprisingly solid for its uh... nature I guess. I went into it expecting horrible plebshit. I GOT horrible plebshit. And then at the end of it all I looked back on the whole thing and went "Hey that was actually pretty fucking good."
Expect Pizza Hut product placement to an insane level, and Deathnote with some initially very interesting Mechs.

This was my experience too.
I really disliked season 1 and i disliked most of season 2 but then it ended and i thought about it a bit and i realized that overall it was an enjoyable experience.
Far from the best thing ever and it definitely did have its flaws.
But enjoyable none the less.

Code Geass is a fun show. It does some things pretty well, which similar series haven't. Lelouch is both an interesting and entertaining character, Suzaku can be annoying at first but he's actually a good foil. That makes for a few great scenes. Crazy events happen, but they're entertaining and do fit the theme even if they lack plausibility.
That's why I agree with the "don't take it too seriously" advice, but that's more because the series is unrealistic, over-the-top and operatic from the start and by design, rather than because it is a problem. Even the creators have their own in-jokes and are aware of stuff being funny, including but not limited to Pizza Hut, the Emperor, spinkicks, Orange, etc.

The plot is ridiculous, and that is part of what makes it son fun. The characters are kind of cardboard and like nearly every anime, the writers do not know how to properly portray characters who are supposed to be intelligent (especially Lelouch and his father).
But you should still probably watch it.

I disagree with that, a lot. Lelouch is intelligent, but he's also meant to be flawed. The guy is an older teenager / young adult, not an experienced 20 or 30 year old. He's also extremely emotional, rather than cold and aloof.
Then again, I've always found the "if you're super-intelligent, then that means you should be above such measly things as emotions at all times" approach to be completely arbitrary and overused, so I much prefer this more human outlook, even if it might detract from the character's intelligence.

As far as "genius" characters are concerned, I think there's a sliding scale from Shogo Makishima (talking about intelligent things) to Light Yagami before he loses his memories (actually doing intelligent things).
