I'd guess it is because it is packed together with characters and the story.
When I listen to K-On songs I am not enjoying it on a musical level, but on a character level, it is like extension media to the show. I don't think I'd ever listen to songs like the ones from K-On if I didn't picture the characters with it.
Same thing with, for example, Opera. It's on a different level when you listen to a piece and knowing its context.

Shingeki no Kyojin was pretty awful, but the soundtrack was good pushing very good, even though I'm not personally a huge fan of Sawano. If you can't disassociate your dislike of the show/it's tumblrcore fanbase from objectively evaluating the music you need to grow the fuck up.

>>113264312
It seems to me that a lot of soundtracks are as good as they are because they're able to be fusions of all sorts of different styles and traditions. You've got everything from the Western orchestral tradition to East Asian musical tradition to fucking American hip-hop. That combined with a large pool of talent makes for some really neat stuff.

>>
>>113264476
Honestly I think it's like that for me for most songs. The main reason I listen to a lot of anime songs is because of the show it is related to and the memories it gives me when I think back on it, especially if it's a really great and emotional piece

Sawano has recently struck me as being stuck making the same OST over and over.

I'm honestly starting to buy OST's for series I haven't even seen, simply because there's so many good OST's for garbage series. Case in point, Horizon on the Middle of Nowhere, Kill la Kill, Le Portrait de Petit Cossette and numerous others.

His work in Gundam Unicorn is something you can really, really appreciate if you listen to it intently. The way he introduced the base melodies in OST 1, built upon them in OST 2, interwove them into OST 3 and tied everything together in OST 4 was like listening to a musical tapestry.

I think it has a lot to do with how anime is edited and paced. You look at a lot of western movies and shows, and it feels less and less like they give music the room breath; tons of quick cuts and changes in perspective and shots, and in action movies in particular, fucking use of shaky cam. A composer can only do so much with that kind of imagery. Plenty of anime give the composers room to breath.

There's also this perspective in Hollywood right now where it's seen that music that's too upfront can be "emotionally manipulative", which leads to directors and people who are producing the film or show to ask for less melody and robust sound. I personally hate this mindset because I think it's spawned almost completely from a sense of cynicism and jadedness.

A lot of issues I have with recent Western films is the reliance on actual songs. It'd be like watching a Nanoha film and having 20 Nana Mizuki songs instead of actual score.

Honestly I'd much rather have something like, say, The Fountain, or Drive, or Bladerunner.

I still generally listen to vidya and animu soundtracks more often. Listening to something like NieR or Mushishi I just wonder whether there's any films in the last half decade or so that've actually had notable scores and generally don't find much.

I can't really blame Zimmer; he's writing the music these producers and directors want.

I mean I look at a lot of these movies, and I can't really hear them not sounding like they do, if that makes any sense. Like, people criticize him for writing music now that's ostinato heavy, and doesn't really have a whole lot of melody, but how can you really develop a melody when shots are changing every two seconds? The ostinatos also keep a sense of pacing when the scenery is being jerked around like crazy.

A good soundtrack is not necessarily good music. I've heard fantastic soundtracks that are a pain to listen to on their own. Hell, that's the case for most good soundtracks - if they sound too good on their own they become overbearing often.

Hell, MGR has really shitty metal but it works because of the context. And the fact that you're too distracted by the boss battle to notice it's shitty metal, and you're too distracted by the metal to realize how shitty the boss fights are. It's a win-win.

Let me elaborate, both elements are toned down somewhat compared to similar aspects in other games/media, and that allows them to mesh together better. Apart they're mediocre at best, but together it's amazing.

Imagine playing MGR without the music. Kinda becomes a meh game, right? The gameplay isn't all that engaging on its own, though still quite fun. Same goes for Giant Robo. Or Amadeus. Or anything else that utilizes music heavily. They tone down other elements to make room for the strong auditory input.

Go play the game then on mute then, and come back and tell me it's the same experience.
Hell, watch this video without the sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbQdxGe0sqU

The thing is, whether playing games or watching anime or what not, so long as the music isn't the main focus, it needs to be somewhat toned down for you to be able to digest everything in stride. You don't listen to Mendelssohn in soundtracks, and in MGR the metal isn't as complex or full-bodied as it could be. Melodically it's simple, the rhythm is consistent, and the only time it goes crazy is in an interlude or something, like that one guitar solo in the Monsoon fight.

There's no reason to fight this, it's a part of who we are, our human limitations, a RULE OF NATURE.

>>
>>113268328
No, that is something composers actively keep into mind. Seriously, look it up. There's a reason soundtracks tend to be so ambient. It's a staple of composing music for films and games and even anime. There's a place for grand melodies and golden-age film scores, but it's not the majority of the movie/game.
>>
>>113268508

Not all soundtracks need to be toned down, but there are certainly different considerations for BGMs than for just music designed to be heard on its own.

>>113268536

>>
>>113268328
Well, there's a reason you don't see songs as complex as classical compositions in movies, anime and so on. Like, you can slap Gymnopédies in almost anything with a more melancholic tone (Mother 3, Haruhi movie, Mahoyo, and Subahibi all have it, and a lot of other stuff). Same with something like Ravel's Bolero or Csikós Post (a fucking SNES yoshi game uses that song), but can you imagine something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKgcHjq1xKQ or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UORxpTn-pOE working properly in most cases in anime, VNs or stuff like that? They would just distract the spectator/reader/etc. Of course in a more agitated scene they might work, but most of the times in stuff like that you'd just have a generic instrumental hard rock song slapped in.

Yeah, but I don't know if "ambient" is the right wording. It's about the composer ensuring that they aren't completely overwhelming the scene; being louder than the people talking, etc.

When I think ambient, I think of something synthetic with a lot of pads.

Well, you'll have to provide specific examples, because I'm not sure what I'm supposed to look for, exactly.

It just seems like you're just confusing composing something for a scene, and composing something for a game level. Obviously, when you're composing for a specific scene, you want to draw a specific emotion, or make something appropriate for what's happening on screen.

But video games aren't that specific unless we're talking about cutscenes. Like, I literally don't comprehend how complex music could distract people from gameplay. People listen to their own music(music meant to be listened to on its own) while playing video games all the time.

In that case, yes. But I just don't see enough space for more complex compositions in games and the like. Not because they're superior or anything, but because OSTs are supposed to enhance the experience. They can still be creative and interesting, but too many details will ultimately distract the player. Well, unless it's a really powerful scene, in a key moment of the game. Grandiose or complexity in those cases could work. I mean, if you do know a good example of a more complex song in a game, I'd like to see it. Most of the more memorable songs for me are more about how important they were for each moment in the game/anime/VN rather than their "quality".
