It's anime-original, technically. It's a continuation of the story started in the last three episodes of Ayakashi. Those episodes really should be watched before the rest of the series, but especially before the last three episodes of Mononoke.

Sequel probably never. I think in 2008 to 2009 the director or producer said they wanted to do a second season, but it's been years now.

Rotoscoping is a legitimate form of animation. Why is everyone acting as if it is some kind of cheap trick when it isn't.

Probably because the only rotoscope they know is Aku no Hana, and that means rotoscope = bad.
Or maybe because they think it's easier to just rotoscope something than animate it normally.

It's a great anime. It isn't top-tier animation though. You don't watch Horizon for the animation. And if you watch it for the fanservice, you're going to be fucked over storywise. So I watch it for the plot. It's a good show, doesn't belong on a god-tier animation list.

>more gets spent on animation
what do you mean more? more time? are you saying that the refinement of the keyframes and inbetweens leads to better spacing and timing? and even so, was it done on paper and a lightbox? i can't see this style done digitally anywhere. why is this the case? has nobody bothered to try and reproduce the lightbox and its saturation effects on a cel?

>>112745727
Have you ever animated? Have you ever drawn the same picture, slightly different, 24 times in the span of hour or 5? Just to get one second of animation? The cleaner it looks, the more went into it, the more that went into it, the more someone got paid. Movies have larger budgets for less scenes. One more note, hand-drawn costs more than digital, not because it looks better.(Not all the time) it's just more expensive overall.

>>112745764
Oh don't get me wrong, it was wonderfully animated. They way they handled the floating menus for commands was beautiful. It's just not supposed to go on the god-tier list. It's really just a slightly above average anime with one hell of a plot and character development.

Digital animation can't produce good line arts.
That's why a digital studio like KyoAni only makes soulless animation.
>>
>>112745890
It's the imperfections. Do you know people who prefer the sound of vinyl to digital? There are certain artifacts that are near impossible to replicate with any amount of technology, merely because looking good makes it look worse. This sounds strange, but it's the IMPERFECTIONS in hand-drawn animation that can make it feel more "warm".
>>
>>112745974
>>112745973
so if i wanted to get patlabor tier there, on my own, i'd need actual paper and years of experience, with more years to flesh it out? damn...

>Do you know people who prefer the sound of vinyl to digital?
They're called retards.
>>
>>112746017
It's a shame that you can't find animation paper anymore...
>>
>>112746051
but i'm still trying to grasp why i have to go that far. couldn't i just project a scan of the texture map of animation paper on my digital canvas, then set up my brush to generate uncertain "spreads" like a real pencil/pen? i really love this old style, and the way these people devoted to such sharp ass animation sequences, and i don't want it to disappear before my eyes ;_; . I really do love it.
>>
>>112746017
Basically. You're trying to make technology less perfect in order to get a look you want. This very hard, and not really worth it. But don't worry. No matter what anyone says animation is an art. There will always be those guys who draw amazing stuff in their free time. I once saw a Russian animated piece done in oil-based paint. That was weird.

>>112746051
Doesn't make the point less valid. It's the same reason people were ripping on the latest Hobbit film for being 60 fps, it looked "too good".
>>
>>112746051
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiqNQbQYhcM

The use of pencil and paper for animating is still widespread. What has changed compared to animation from over a couple of decades ago is that no one physically paints animation cels anymore, it's all done on computer now.
>>
>>112745890
I'm sure they could produce something very similar to hand drawn but it would be very costly. Look at digital drawings, it is possible to achieve the look of an oil painting or a water colour painting but to make it seem like it's actually not a digital painting you need lots of skill and work. Digital animation is done because it's cheap. Now go try figuring out why a producer using digital animation doesn't spend tons of budget and time on trying to copy hand drawn animation.
It's probably cheaper and less work intensive to produce an actual hand drawn animation than trying to perfectly emulate the look of a hand drawn animation with digital animation.
>>
>>112746105
That looks digital.
>>
>>112746107
that's what i'm thinking too, but at the same time you're now exposed to destructive decisions outside the digital arena right? stuff like layers and strokes have to be chosen wisely in physical media, but i guess being more conscious that way makes it come out that much better.
>>
>>112746105
>The use of pencil and paper for animating is still widespread
Fucking bullshit.
>>
>>112745573
It's absolutely possible to make that sort of animation with today's technology. Only the animator's skill matters here, not whether it's drawn on paper or a tablet.

that's just skill there? but it's so rare to see that nowadays, even in films. that type of evenly spaced rotation of an arm...it just gets me teary-eyed
>>
>>112746168
That's true though. This is also one of the reason anime is almost never produced at 1080p, because animators need to draw on larger sheets.

Most anime studios don't have the money to support an all-digital workflow for the animators, pencil and paper are a lot cheaper. Tablet usage is slowly increasing, but it'll take a while before it becomes the norm.

It's rare because mechanical animation is increasingly done using CGI, so there's less opportunities for hand-drawn mechanical to shine. Timing and spacing is something that's controlled by the animator, whether it's done analog or digitally is irrelevant.

If you only watched classics of course you're going to be biased. You're comparing the cream of the crop to everyday average shows, the past is not intrinsically better. As discussed above completely hand drawn animation does have a look that's hard to copy with digital animation. But the pure animation as such, yes, for that it doesn't matter what medium an animator uses.
But I doubt there are many people here that can objectively judge or even distinguish between a complete look and the single components it's made of.

It's not just nostalgia. Many of the old and more obscure anime aren't availble anywhere and I doubt there are even many Japanese people left who still own a copy of them. So it's not even possible judging these decades properly as nearly nothing made it out of Japan.
