Personally I've always had a soft spot for characters like Koushiro or Jou or Iori or Takeru that are "supposed to be background." The "obvious heroes" are, well, usually too "obvious."

The few times he does get any kind of spotlight, he does something cool unless it's one of those times where he needs to suggest a sensible course of action so that Daisuke can demand a risky suicidal one in direct opposition to the point of Taichi's character, and eventually be proven right because he's got a giant plot-armor.
02 presents Takeru as a chill guy who's well above giving a fuck about Daisuke's petty jealousy and generally seems to have the right mind about things. This is total nonsense. Takeru's character just has the same problem as every other character in 02 that's not Daisuke, Ken or Iori: the writers do fucking nothing with them.
