There was a discussion about people having to use a plugin to access exhentai and even joe said that you really don't need it, if I understood that correctly.
I also thought people were just stupid for having to use a plugin until recently my cookies where deleted and I couldn't get back in using the normal way.
This is what happens:
accessing exhentai.org yields a redirection to forums.e-hentai.org/remoteapi.php with the parameter ex set to some alphanumeric value
this results in a second redirection to exhentai.org with the parameter poni set to a long alphanumeric value
and finally this results in the cookie yay=louder to be set which is the cookie that makes the sadpanda image appear.
If you are doing it wrong you either won't get redirected at all or get the poni parameter set to no

To conserve CPU time, panda does exact match on the crc value. However, 4chan cleans the images so the crc value for some images is different and thus won't match. This is why you don't get results for some of your attempts to use exlink.
Scrubbing the images does two things. Firstly, this protects the privacy if the image contains user info. Secondly, it prevents images from being used for botting or hacking purposes as any bot commands, code, or data are stripped. At one time, users put mp3 into images and then posted those on 4chan. Thus, 4chan ended up serving MP3 files for awhile since those who knew what was going on could extract the mp3 out of the picture. Stuff like that wastes moot's bandwidth.

Because now you vote sincerely on what you believe is the tag rather than on the numeric value of the tag. Vigilantes and presumably power users with higher Base Level will be able to see values so this gives them yet another competitive advantage to remain on the toplists by voting on tags via numeric value.
