Can we have a classic anime general? It's nice to talk about old things every once in a while. Let's try to keep it pre-Eva.

Some questions to get the ball rolling a bit.

What Classic animce have you seen? Which ones would you say are your favourites?

Pic related is one of my favourite classic comedies. I'm also very fond of the second Lupin III series.

I'm interested in Urusei Yatsura for the Oshii parts and the movies. Are they that good?

My favourite retro-anime (I didn't watch a lot) are Maison Ikkoku, Wings of Honneamise, Patlabor 2, City Hunter, Nadia, and Laputa.

The Mamoru Oshii parts really are good. Especially the movies. The first couple seasons of Urusei Yatsura are hot and cold in quality, but it quickly builds into something great. I still think its the best Rumiko Takahashi based work overall, mostly because of Oshii and various other people who helped improve on it.

It's encouraging. I'll watch it soon, thanks.

But even better than Maison Ikkoku? that seems impossible.

>But even better than Maison Ikkoku? that seems impossible.
It's better but in a different kind of way,Maison it's about a love story, daily life and troubles, here it's just the story of a teenager/young adult dealing with his life and having adventures and oshii decided to make a better story and superior to the original manga(example,Lum from the manga it's more possessive and aggressive and Ataru it's more stubborn and more serious).

Charismatic characters you start to know until they are part of you and this works excellent in drama episodes or comical moments, like when Ataru and Mendou are trap in a vault or when Ataru thinks Lum decided to leave him,the childhood of Sakura, the christmas episode, when they make a movie,Ataru vs Mendou, the one with his mother having the same dream(the movies with oshii are excellent and beautiful dreamer it's one of the best animated movies ever).

The Kazuo run it's also good not so good compared with previous one but it had his moments(like when Lum find a dimension where ataru lost against her and he and his family lost everything, the ghost girl, the cake episode, the girl with the armor). And his movie Lum forever it's really weird and awesome. Also I almost cry with the end in the 5 movie, even when the personality of the main characters it's more the one from the manga.
Anyway maybe it's just me,but I like urusei yatsura a little more that Maison Ikkoku

Are there decent releases of Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2 and Maison Ikkoku these days? Since the BDs are all out now, I think.

Except for the UY movies. Why did they of all things not get a BD release? That just seems backwards, with Beautiful Dreamer being one of the most popular parts of the franchise.

>the christmas episode

This was the thing that got me into Urusei Yatsura. Saw it randomly at anime expo back in 1999 and, even though I had already seen some of Urusei Yatsura, it was hilarious just by itself.

And frankly, watching Urusei Yatsura is worth it just because Ataru is what every harem lead should be.
>>
>>111670656

>He didn't have one redeeming feature. Not one.

He had tons of redeeming features. The whole point of his character was he was yin and yang. A super lecherous, perverted and deceitful young guy...but also genuinely honest, open and nice at his core. And he really did love Lum.

He just used all his lewd behavior and outgoing personality to hide his true nature. He's basically a Tsundere male done right.
>>
>>111671179
>This was the thing that got me into Urusei Yatsura.
I though I was the only one who got in the show for the christmas episode,I was watching this show and it was good but lack of something and then I saw that one and damn,I just think this show got really potential to be one of my favorites, and I had a perfect ride with this show.
I also love this show because it remind me a lot of my life when I was in high school, the lazy student, the friends who are pretty much assholes but in the end nice people you can count when you need them, the mother who wants you to make a good living with your life and the father who is there but for some reason it's invisible. Ataru was a pretty cool character,he wasn't beta,it was self-aware,nice guy even when everybody though the other way around and he grows up during the show leaving his crush in Shinobu(who was his true love at least that's what he though)and accepting Lum in his life.

Because they're releasing blu ray releases of movies for sales reasons. I agree its stupid. It would be like not making a Blu Ray remake of Empire of the Sun because it didn't meet expectations back in the 80s. Yet it is a cult success now and recognized as one of Spielberg best movies.

Just like UY Beautiful Dreamer should be recognized as one of Oshii's best movies. it is tied with Porco Rosso and CCS Movie 2 as my favorite anime movie.

Anyway I finished Rose of Versailles not too long ago and damn that last episode was pretty brutal. I heard they wanted to remake it which would look pretty good with today's animation but I loved the 80s hand drawn look and it's all part of it's charm.

/a/ decides which retro anime I watch next from these five:

Watch the five, in whatever order you can.
Macross, Zeta, and KOR should be required watching Ideon is a masterpiece, but it may be "hard" if you're not a Tomino/mecha fan. The serie is merely a prologue to Be Invoked.
Cassern is maybe the least important, but still interesting.

Thank god for this thread. I wish I could talk about pre-2000's anime with people. I've been watching a lot of 80's and 90's series the past 8 years because I really don't care for most contemporary series.

I really like Hime-chan's Ribbon, Marmalade Boy, Kaito Saint Tail, Slayers (seasons and OVAs), Legend of Galactic Heroes, Metal Armor Dragonar, and Cat's Eye so far. Wedding Peach, Fancy Lala, Nurse Angel Ririka SOS, and Miracle Girls are next after I'm done.

I'd say that the pink jacket and red jacket series are neck and neck. Though I tend to go with the latter because Yuji Ohno's music is simply better in it.

So, basically, I cannot agree.

Supposedly, based on the wiki page, they were going to make an anime around the year 2000 after the end of the manga. But quit due to 'new stringent censorship laws were passed in Japan'.

I don't know how reliable the wiki page is though. Plus the fact that anime seemed to get more exaggerated after the year 2000. I don't understand how crap like Mahoromatic, Blood+ or Basilisk would be permitted by the censors, but 3x3 Eyes is 'too extreme'.

Anime is typically a genre that suffers from low budgets, which give rise to poor animation which is referred to in the ironic sense as QUALITY. Though it's even worse in the new adaptation of Sailor Moon considering their budget probably isn't shit, it's just Toei not giving a fuck.

You know, this series could've been better handled if it was written by someone who wasn't a hack. I actually liked the world design of Konan, Kutou, Hokkan, and Sairo.

I actually want to see a well-written story of the Byakko Seishi. The Genbu Seishi got fucked up unfortunately.

The scenes where he groveled like a little bitch because he missed her were the best. And she never held it against him, she just wanted darling's love.
Those parts at the end of a couple movies where they almost kiss were such a tease, they did a good one at ep. 195 or so where they kiss inside that bell thing.

This is exactly why I loved both these characters. His voice made Ataru and General Blue. If there was ever a voice actor who I could use as an example of providing life and unique properties to a character, it would be him.

Or the voice for Takamura in Hajime no Ippo. Or the voice for Lisa in The Simpsons.

To be frank, I really didn't care for the original FY storyline. I found the Byakko and Genbu Seishi to be more interesting, but Genbu Kaiden really dashed my expectations.

I just hope Watase doesn't screw-up Byakko Kaiden because I really liked Tokaki and Subaru. Tatara and Suzuno was pretty tragic too.

I was forced to watch Fishugi Yuugi by my friend. Because back in the 90s, my friend and I watched any anime we could find. And we watched it together.

But god....after about 10 episodes or something, I really wanted to quit, while he was totally into it. And then halfway through, when the only character I liked got killed, I was just done. I couldn't take any more. To think there was still 26 more episodes of that to go...I don't even want to think about it.

Then the same thing happened again with this show and Groove Adventure Rave. I couldn't stand the shows, but my friend just obsessed over them. And forced me to watch them. So much pain....

Which is ironic because it was their real breakout hit that put both them and Megumi Hayashibara on the map. But that's just in Japan.

Honestly, as much of a fan of both Production IG, Megumi AND Yuzo Takada as I am, Blue Seed is not exactly my favorite anime. It feels very...strange. Like a show a ton of people threw tons of ideas hastily together and made a show. Kind of like the 'Regular Show' of anime.

I'm waiting; I'm waiting for a shonen to grip me like HNK did. To this day i can sit down and watch HNK,its juggling artist, Quality, and some what pointless filler. Normally things that would make me write off most shows today because studios should know better not to completely fuck up., unless you're DEEN. But really HNK is just one of those shonen that fans of the genre should watch and understand that its ok to let your cast die. Its ok to kill the main antagonist and NOT befriend him. now HNK 2 was bad, had great fights but overall after you watched the first season there was really nothing that could top it but they tried.

That is one very specific exception. A handful of very high budget OVAs and movies had better detail. But they were the definitely exception. It wasn't until digital aids that breasts started to grow larger and more detailed on a regular basis.

Urushihara was so fucking good with character designs and animation. What happened to him anyway? He just kind of disappeared off the face of the earth.
>>
>>111685517
That's cheating. That OVA has amazing breast physics even by today's standards.
I love how even still Urushihara's girls look 90s and are crazy shiny.

I know "epic" is the most over cliched word used on the internets but that word just sums up the most "epic" opening song for an anime, ever.

Pretty sure he still does cover art and centerfolds for some doujin monthly.
I want to say Hotmilk or Karakuten.

I remember he thought she wanted to fuck the dog.

The gravity of the emotion in that song just expresses how strong Kyoko and Godai's feeling for each other are getting by that point in the show.
I always though it was a bit odd that the music box set had a couple songs from Gilbert Osullivan on them.
Was there a western version of the show that used them?

I don't remember the details, but Alone Again, and the other song, were used in one episode before they were taken for copyright infringement.

Wait
GR got blu rays? When?
>>
>>111686193
They clear that up pretty early on.
Also did anyone notice how fucking old Soichiro sounded when they first did a flashback. Dude sounded like he was in his fifties despite their age difference being roughly what Godai's and that of his student who's name eludes me.
They either gave Soichiro a younger voice later or just didn't make him talk at all, I can't remember.

Judging by that image, he's improved

>>111685889
His character designs were shit - generic 90s crap. His animations, shading, and anatomy - boner inducing.

Get Down was the other song they used.

Not always a good thing. The women in City Hunter looked like fucking Kenshiro.

And have you played a 90s eroge? Sex scenes are grossly deformed because artists can't into perspective.

It's better today, trust me. We still get ample thick women. Go watch Sabagebu or something.

Just started watching Lodoss.

Holy shit, aside from some animation issues, it's fucking gorgeous so far. Easily one of the best looking things I've watched.

Also, that op is god tier

I want to marathon this, but at the same time savor it.

Kei was hotter anyway.

Also fuck Dirty Pair flash! My Lovely Angels have curves!

Japanese really do fantasy well. I love Heroic Legend of Arslan as well as Lodoss and Berserk.

It's a gorgeous show, the BD rips look pretty impressive next to the rip I had before this, take a look.

>>111686899
And then here's the BD. Just lovely.

But that comes from the joke that Kaori the lead female role is often mistaken for a bishounen.
There are plenty of sexy women in City Hunter, especially Saeko.
The only eroge I played from the 90s was Little My Maid, and it does have some pretty bad anatomy.

Lodoss always bothered me with the kitchen sink approach to storytelling that it had. It played out more like Chuunibyou fantasy role playing (since that's where the creators got the idea) than it did a cohesive fairy-tale world.

>>111686654
>The women in City Hunter looked like fucking Kenshiro

Don't exaggerate like that.

Only Kaori did.

>It played out more like Chuunibyou fantasy role playing (since that's where the creators got the idea) than it did a cohesive fairy-tale world
That's probably because it was basically based off a D&D campaign.
>>
>>111686303
Is it worth reading/watching? I've been needing a good romantic series.
>>
>>111687057
Kaori was cute damn you!
>>
>>111686669
Did you notice how much from that series inspired Ocarina of Time?
Ganondorf is basically Beld with one of the goblin minion's faces.
And Link's tunic looks like Deedlit's.
Even princess Zelda looks a little bit like her, especially with the giant elf east they have.

Go to bed or count your Laserdisc collection you 15 year old.

Fuck, I'm seeing it now.

Though I'm not so sure about it actually inspiring anything.
