Honestly? More budget. This show started out as basically an ad for the movies. It shows sometimes, no matter how well some parts were directed.
The biggest problem with this show (for me) was that it was animated on threes nearly throughout. It's jarring and constantly breaks immersion. Like people give the Monogatari series shit for being a 'slideshow'. They don't know true suffering until they've watched this.

But the ending was amazing.
All the ideas and themes were brought to a satisfying conclusion. The show presented us with a multifaceted view of humanity, empathy and its limitations, the role of and need for leaders and heroes in society, and the way that technology can bring out both the best and the worst in us.
Hajime and Katze were juxtaposed as manifestations of those two aspects, and drove our characters (Utsutsu, Joe, Sugane, Paiman and Rui) to grow as human beings, and at the end those two forces of nature merged so that they could become whole.
The director's cut was better in execution but it wasn't essential.

Yea, but the art is pretty and the actions sequences are cool. The quality varies pretty wildly between the adaptations, I'll admit. But if it's done right it's bretty gud.
