This is still the MC we're talking about. Using 00 as a convenient example again the anime opens with his past as a child soldier completely disillusioned with his idea of god. Cue 0 Gundam showing up as a literal deus ex machina and in the first 5 minutes it creates the foundation for his character that rest of the series follows.
That's not to say Setsuna is well written or Inaho isn't, but I think it's completely understandable that people aren't thrilled about being left in the dark. Especially when the MC has the kind of personality that needs context to be believable.
