There was no other way out for her. Having her die would be too much risk, and drama is not something that Kamachi does in Index. But she couldn't stay like nothing happened either, if she conserved her human size, it'd be an easy win for her over other girls, because she has raised the most flags with Touma, by far.
Kamachi made her too compatible and special for Touma that something like this had to happen to prevent the logical next step between them after all the obvious attachment and affection they grew for each other during NT10, 15cm transformation to make it "fair" for the rest and keep Touma's character undeveloped in the relationship sense, because she had no competition as it stood.

Yet, we got the +1 to harem reset button once again, which is probably the least interesting way of resolving the whole situation.
