Hardly. The only difference is Mawaru kept the grain, which really doesn't make it look much better. Re-Calium also sharpened the really soft line art without overshooting, which is a plus.

I completely disagree. The sharpening on the ReCallium looks atrocious. I can spot way more artifacts and it just looks gross. The soft look and grain on the Mawaru is far better to me.

While Re-Calium's release did have some awful haloing in certain frames (http://compare.bakashots.me/compare.php?setId=720&comparisonId=5133&imageNum=1), I generally like the reduced grain and noise around the edges. Re-Calium should've turned down the sharpening or masked a bit better, but their grain and noise removal without smoothing details was pretty spot on. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

That isn't really saying much. Every generation had a lot of rehashing. The 70s, 80s, and 90s had significantly more innovation in styles than the 00s and 10s, however.

Not the guy you're responding to, but although I agree with you remember that the industry in the 70-90 wasn't as big as it is now, there were only big studios instead of hundreds of them so now we have a significant difference in numbers but the ratio is more or less the same.
It was also a different time, back then anime were reaching the peak as a medium, so they were more interested in exploring new grounds rather than competing on who makes the most smelly shit like they do it now.
Don't get me wrong, there are still good anime now, but I feel that a lot of the "naivety" is lost to these days, and the mediocre crap is much more now. Back then I could consider myself lucky to not miss an episode of a series on TV, now it feels like I have to dodge dog turds on dirty sidewalks.
I was also younger back then, so I have my nostalgia goggles on, don't take me too seriously.
