Anyone wanna have a brief retro-anime thread?
>>110390312
Retro anime threads are never brief
>>110390312
There's a hentai game that has that character in it. I saw it once on swfchan. Does anyone have any idea what the game is called?
>>110390446
I dunno, I figure a thread without a solid focus will die.
>>110390492
Try googling "dirty pair swf".
VOTOMs is pretty cool
>>110390312
Downloaded the Akage no Anne BDs that came out earlier this year raw and am currently editing some older subs to fit them at the moment.
>>110393780
How do you do that? I want to do that with the Macross II BDs that come out the 25th. Already pre-ordered, but they do not have eng subs.
They really fixed the shitty animation quality of the original. Those blue looking scenes are even gone.
This is my Leiji Matsumoto folder, am I missing anything at all? I did a last minute check last time and just wanted to be sure. In the Galaxy 999 folder are the two films.
>>110393780
I just downloaded Anne but I grabbed the one up at Bakabt at the moment. Good move or should I have gotten the BDs?
>>110394096
Is SSX in your Harlock folder? And you're missing Galaxy Railways and Maetel Legend.
Almost done with the Black Jack OVAs.I have a whole folder of Pre 2000s OVAs on my PS3 for viewing

>>110394155
Yes to SSX Harlock being in my Harlock folder and I no longer have enough space for Galaxy Railways and Maetel Legend. I have less than 3GB on my 2TB at the moment. Once I do some cleaning up i'll add those.
>>110390312
Currently watching GTO for the first time if that counts, I've heard a lot of /a/non's say they don't like the anime adaption but I think it's pretty great
>>110393971
If it is hardsubbed that will take a lot of work. If it is softsubbed either in seperate subtitle files or mkv then its a realativly easy process which there are guides all about how to do.
>>110394096
This is the bakabt one.
>>110394096
>>110394366
This is the BD raw.
>>110390312
What's that really good show that you guys always go on about? Fluorescent Angelic Armageddon?
I got all the OVAs that /a/ raves about including Nuku Nuku. Looks fun.
>>110394788
/a/ raves about OVAs?
>>110394969
Well I don't think I should have said rave, but talked about enough in these threads to where I had the urge to download it. Heard El Hazard was good too so I got that.
>>110395087
Are there not tons of series of that?
This is all pre-2000 anime I've completed, not counting movies:

Do you just watch literally what ever is on that season and nothing else?
>>110395995
Not really, it's just that the kind of shows I like only really started getting made in the 2000s.
And I only got into anime around 2005 or 2006 in the first place, I was more of a manga person before.
>>110395820
I saw Akira and Vampire Hunter D, but nothing else, cheers.
>>110395762
Everyone should see Pop Chaser a tleast once in their life time.
I consider it to be one of the most perfect anime episodes.
Watching Armitage III currently. That's really good. I was beginning to think that all old OVAs are just good visuals with action but shit story since they can't do anything with so few episodes.
I was disappointed by Lodoss and Lemnear.
>>110397529
Ain't Cream Lemon a hentai?
>>110390312
I just started watching Slayers today, and boy is it good. Oh and I finished reading Mazinger Z yesterday too.

>>110397792
It's a fun OVA though.
>>110397681
What difference does it make?
>>110397608
Nobody said Lemnear was good for its story.
>>110397970
I enjoyed it, don't worry. But it's still a bit disappointing. It feels like a waste.
>>110397970
I know what you mean.
Which reminds me, the fact that Front Innocent only ever got one episode is truly one of the greatest tragedies of our time.
>>110397902
This is a nice gif, I'll check this too.
As for stronger titles to check out, try Patlabor and Bubblegum Crisis.
I miss City Hunter.
>>110398142
The Aim for the Ace movie is really fucking enjoyable. If you like Gunbuster, you really need to check it out. Still the TV series is also pretty good. I don't know the status on the manga though.

Lets be honest, not everyone have time to watch 26 episodes of a melodramatic shoujo sports anime from 1973. Still it's a really nice show.
>>110398287
Adding on to that, it's a real shame that so few 70s anime movies have BD releases.
And speaking about BD releases, I made a list about older anime that have bluray releases

I moved on to Ashita no Joe 2 after the first season. I didn't exactly need to see the body blow arc again but it looks very nice; lines, the anime.

>>110399031
I think that's a HDTV airing. I'd send death threats for the 16:9 cropping otherwise.
Haha wo tazunete sanzenri got one too, not recorded though.
>>110390312
Why make the the cutoff 2000? Stylistically things definitely changed more in the mid-nineties. 2000 was simply around the time when digital animation became a big thing.
>>110399473
That's why. It became the majority so it's the cutoff.
>>110399473
It doesn't matter because hardly anyone talks about post-1995 shows in these threads.
>>110399045
There really isn't much to do, for the episodes that have the newer scripts. I just styled it how I wanted and tried adjusting some timings that seemed wierd. There are only some much older scripts for the later episodes though which will probably be more hassle.
>>110399275
I did think that was odd and dissapointing, you are probably right.
>>110397722
Slayers is fantastic. Slayers Next is probably even better.
>>110399582
That's pretty grainy even at 720p.
Just like God intended.
>>110399473
I consider the cutoff when Ink and paint were phased out.
Ink and paint gave a different, albeit, slightly lower quality feel. Plus they gave some of the best visuals for one of the the climactic sequences of End of Evangelion as some of the painted cells were filmed on their reverse side to give a distorted version of familiar scenes from the series.
>>110399726
I found the difference between these amusing.
>>110394366
>>110394464
In the first one Anne doesn't even have freckles that you can see they just look like smudges on her face.
>>110399582
By the way, what other WMTs got BD release? I know Heidi got one, but I don't know about the others.
>>110394464
Damn that looks good.
>>110400022
When I originally watched it I thought she was supposed to be pale as a ghost like heavily freckled people usually.
>>110400022
Yeah, that's the beauty of HD transfers, even if they're only mastering at 720p and then upscaling to 1080 for the BD. I guess they don't master at 1080p to keep the grain from being overwhelming, leading to DVNR.
>>110400225
She is pretty pale I guess the contrast is way too high on that older rip.
>>110400044
The Anne compilation movie got BD years ago, but other than that nothing else yet.

How is there hardly any mention of Macross in this thread?
I still think DYRL is the single best piece of animation ever made. I tell everybody to watch it just because it's so damn gorgeous to look at.

>>110407065
Do you have a better one? This is just the one I had found at the time.
>>110407101
>>110390312
I love Dirty Pair a lot, I should rewatch it. I watched it a couple of years ago and it still stands as one of my favourites.
>>110407181
And a loli pantyshot. The rest are mostly just various shots of Hitomi.
>>110407181
No. Well, maybe. At one point I toyed with the idea of encoding it, but it would be a pain. The QTS releases are always completely unfiltered and so can often look ok, but I think they're fixed bitrate. Sometimes they aren't great as a result.
Ashita no Joe 2 has a really good looking BD release.
Minky Momo is very grainy and blurry. It isn't great (as a result of the original film I suspect), but it's a lot better than the upscale treatment Creamy Mami got.
>>110407386
It didn't seem so bad but that might be because of my screen size. The only problems I saw was some static on some frames here and there. Also someone pointed out this error in the OP and now I can't unsee it. The series is pretty episodic but it's still entertaining. Hitomi gets mad for seemingly no reason at times. Wondering if they'll ever get past kissing or if they'll stick to the thrills of stealing forever.
Astro Boy has a nice BD, but the colours appear to be fucked. I think "crushed blacks" is the term.
>>110407567
Oh man, is that from the Strongest Robot arc? I read Pluto, it was so good.
Takarajima suffers from lower than usual bitrate video. I don't know why it was released on BD25s instead of BD50s.
>>110407438
God damn that looks great. Does season 1 have a BD?
>>110407637
The second episode. Or the first episode of the US release.
I don't know if it's part of that arc, since I've only seen those first two episodes. I guess Atom gets permanently seperated from Tenma by episode 3.
Space Battleship Yamato has fantastic BDs. You can see all the hairs and shit they had on the cels or lenses while they made it. The films are surprisingly not as well handled; they seem blurrier and were probably on lower-quality film stock.
>>110407753
Yes, but it was discontinued before it finished. I think it was an upscale.
I know they had issues finding copies of the original film though. The colours in the next episode previews are messed up, and some of them just have voice overs with no actual preview. It could be related.
Thanks for the info anon. What one should one DL then? Subs or not doesn't matter as most of these probably aren't subbed anyways.
>>110408110
What are you referring to here?
>>110390312
I literally just got off watching a few episodes of the new UK re-release of Outlaw Star. It's pretty much just a repress of the old DVD, no new material which is disappointing, but it's still rollicking good fun in spaaaaaaaace.
>>110408157
I mean for these older series on BD you mention varying quality so which should you go for in general?
>>110407846
Yeah, if Tenma's there it's definitely the Strongest Robot arc. Great writing.
>>110402273
>lucky star
>bad
>>110408237
For these older series with a good BD transfer, only bloatmode encodes do them justice. So for Urusei Yatsura for example, the Ijine Bizjene encodes are going to be the only ones that look as good as the BDs. Any kind of degraining results in a loss of detail.
>>110407386
Taiga?!
>>110398721
S2 of Rayearth is really shit. Which is a shame because S1 was absolutely incredible.
The homo djinns were hilarious, but S2 just fucking spins its wheels and does the same shit every episode, with an utterly nonsense premise and conclusion. CLAMP obviously wanted to round off at the end of S1 (well, equivalent point in the manga) but were "convinced" to continue.
Good night.
>>110408332
So pretty much you should ask beforehand which is best if you're not savvy at this? What about the cat's eye example where you said the encodes out aren't that good? And the new local release seems to be DVD only as well.
Actually Rayearth BD when? Or ts' of this broadcast for the whole series will do too.
>>110408313
Embarrassing.
>>110406414
>all that Gundam

>>110408886
Yo, X was really cute. I love watching Wing after a couple drinks. That shit's so bad it's funny.
The ones I really don't like are 0083, 08th MS Team, and Wing. Zeta is mediocre and I have a love-hate thing going with Victory.
Turn A is quite good, so I guess it's all sort of worth it. 0080 is fantastic, too.
>>110409105
I wasn't a fan of the stories in 0083 or 08th MS, but the mecha porn made it worth it for me. I hold pretty much the same view with Unicorn.
>>110408083

>>110408758
Frontier was pretty bad. It didn't have much redeeming features the the lead MC was forgettable and seemed only to exist as a focal point for the girls.
His eventually romantic acceptance is just laughable, like they were getting it out of the way. DYRL did it exceedingly right in comparison.
To be fair though, Macross is rocky overall, the most consistently good piece of Macross I've seen was the Macross Plus movie, other entries into the franchise just get dragged down by a lot of silly shit.
>>110409273
Yeah, that's basically how I felt about all of those. Then the mecha porn lost its charm and they were just boring.

To rile you up
>>110411058
>Princess Army
Eww.
>>110411108
Nobody made em yet
>>110411205
Great, the start of shitty VOTOMS sequels.
>>110411522
and thats it
>>110411369
I liked Shining Heresy.
>>110397722
Lisa Ortiz was the perfect voice for Lina Inverse
>>110413535
I really liked all the main cast of the dub. Her, Veronica Taylor as Amelia, Eric Stuart as Gourry and of course, Crispin Freeman as Zelgadis. Oh, and Rachel Lillis was great as Martina in NEXT.I even liked David Moo's Xellos.
Well, I decided to watch the original Sailor Moon for the first time ever since Crystal is coming out now.
And for proper nostalgia experience, I'm watching the Dic dub.
And liking it.
Oh, it's bad. It's very poorly acted in a lot of places and the Canadian accents are funny, but I just can't help but find it all so campily charming.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILQ_pvI4AGI
Thanks to whoever told me to watch the dub.
It's just...wonderful
>>110413858
Crystal looks like it's going to be trash, anyway. I'd just stick with the original.
>>110414068
That's amazing.
What happened to interesting hentai?
>>110414953
same thing that happened to interesting anime.
>>110414768
Yeah, I watched the first episode and it didn't excite me too much. From what I gather, it's going to follow the manga is a sort of Full Metal Alchemist/Brotherhood sort of way.
And those are two other shows I need to get around to seeing.
Also, the art looks like it's trying to be like the glamor spreads from the manga, and cutting out all the silly deformed faces. Which are a great part of the charm of the original.
Oh, and Tuxedo Mask doesn't throw his rose.
Man, I'm only about 16 episodes into the original(LOOOOOONG way to go yet) and I just can't imagine him divorced of his rose.
How do I get into Patlabor/Gunbuster?
The problem with old franchises for me is that, there's just so much material one can't really tell where to start exactly.
>>110415347
>Patlabor/Gunbuster
I think you're a little confused anon.
Anyways, watch everything in production order, always.
I just got done watching gunbuster recently
I loved it up till the last ep, it feels like they ran out of budget and the story straight up made no sense
>>110415347
Patlabor isn't related to Gunbuster, but >>110415426 is a good idea. Just remember: Patlabor has two timelines. The original OVAs then the first two movies.
Then the TV series and the New Files OVAs are a second continuity.
As far as Gunbuster goes, watch it first, then Diebuster. Ignore the movies, those are just mashups of the OVAs.
>>110415451
No, they didn't run out of budget, Anno was being artistic. And if you didn't get the simple telling of the story, then you must be autistic.
>>110415451
The way they made the last episode black and white cost them more money actually.
>the story straight up made no sense
What was confusing? It's very straightfoward.
>>110394176
>that shading
what the fuck? That doesn't look anything like the manga
>>110395644
M.D. Geist
>>110414953
Don't act like Belladonna was even remotely common. Those Tezuka films were complete outliers.
>>110414953
Aga Rooter is the best ova hentai.
>>110415637
>>110415639
The black and white sure but the part where they storyboard the final battle was a bit much. I didn't mind too much because the 'final battle' wasn't the focal point of the drama.
>>110415643
90s OVA Black Jack is best Black Jack.
>>110415637
>>110415639
The story was straight forward to me, I guess I just didnt like the whole time difference that happened after the bomb blew up.
Did I miss something with the gunbuster traveling light speed when the bomb went off or something? I really didnt get how they survived in the fucked up gun buster
>>110415807
>they storyboard the final battle was a bit much
I have no idea what you mean. Also, this is literally the first time I've ever seen somebody complain about the ending of Gunbuster.
>>110415812
suck my dick.
>>110415896
>I have no idea what you mean. Also, this is literally the first time I've ever seen somebody complain about the ending of Gunbuster.
Go back and rewatch it then, the final battle at the end was shown via storyboards.
This isn't even the ending of Gunbuster.
>>110415848
It's called Relativistic Travel. Something they foreshadowed when Noriko and Kazumi went close to the speed of light to catch Noriko's father's ship. They were gone for a few minutes their time, but months for everyone else.
>>110415848
>I just didnt like the whole time difference that happened after the bomb blew up.
But that's actually realistic. Granted, I doubt it was actually the number they gave, but the amount of time they would have travelled into the future would have been massive.
>>110415959
>the final battle at the end was shown via storyboards.
Now I'm really confused. We're talking about Gunbuster here right?
>>110415812
Osamu Dezaki and Akio Sugino make the best team.
>>110415980
>Something they foreshadowed
It's also real and called Special Relativity.
Doesn't everybody know this?
>>110416096
I'm a sucker for everything Dezaki does.
>>110416087
God damn you gigantic fucking muppet, you must have not been paying attention at all when watching Gunbuster or saw it 500 years ago
>>110416180
Oh now I remember. They barely even storyboard it; hence why I forgot about it.
I tried watching Dominion/New Dominion Tank Police but ended up dropping both, it feels like a worse version of Patlabor.
>>110416295
>barely storyboard it
Yeah which was my main problem with it, it was like a quick sequence of story boards. Kinda jarring but luckily the next sequence was good enough to rope me back in.
>>110415637
>anno: " I think that LEGEND OF THE GALACTIC HEROES was well done"
based
>>110416953
Anno has pretty good taste in his cartoons.
>>110416127
is this a reference to something?
Best retro waifu right here.
>>110418788
Ayukawa Madoka is better
>>110418788
>not Yuki
>>110418896
Literally who?
Why won't it ever get subbed?
>>110418983
Is their are torrents for that alive? I was looking for that today. I don't care that's only 5 episodes subbed.
>>110418983
>>110418941
No Lum Bum on them.
>>110419042
I used the ones on nyaa the other day and they worked fine. It's worth it to watch what is subbed so far. You learn to deal with the heartbreak.
>>110419128
Why would aboyhave a lum bum?
>>110418983
Just learn Japanese. It's fun.
Plus now I can watch cool things that'll never be subbed like Jushin Liger and stuff.
>>110419212
BOYS ARE ICKY!
>>110419340
Why would you want to fuck a weird alien from weird space?
>>110419442
Zero gravity G spots in the G-force.
>>110419293
I'm learning Japanese now. It's hard as fuck. How long have you been studying? Always good to hear another student's story.
>>110419293
I'm considering it, not gonna lie. It helps my other hobby is tokusatsu, which has a habit of either being horribly subbed or not subbed at all.
>>110419609
I've been studying for 5-ish years, I guess. I never thought it was difficult except keeping up with kanji sometimes. I still have a lot to learn, but I know enough to watch raw anime and I've done a little bit of TL checking on things.
I probably have a knack for picking up language, though. I studied Spanish and German for a few years before I started studying Japanese. Planning to try and learn some French soon, too.
>>110419715
Tokusatsu is really nice because a lot of it is targeted at children, so the language they use is super easy to understand most of the time.
>>110418941
>not maetelYes I'm aware they're practically identical.
>>110419899
You're right about the tokusatsu thing, I've picked up a lot of common words just through osmosis. Is there anything you'd recommend doing, or should I just dive into the "learn japanese" threads?
>>110413858
Fuck off. If it's your first time watching it, you have no nostalgia. You sound pretentious as fuck saying you find it so "campily charming" when you're obviously too young to understand the charm of cheesy 90s dubs. I hate these threads for the same reason I hate /vr/; it's filled with fucking morons who lack any sort of appreciation for older stuff and are simply watching it because it's "retro" and they want to look like they have better taste. You're not impressing anyone by claiming you have nostalgia for a terrible dub that was before your time, you're revealing yourself as someone who treats older anime like quaint relics to be looked at with curiosity and amusement instead of legitimately enjoyed.
tl;dr, stop liking things ironically and wearing the media of previous generations like a fashion accessory, you fucking hipster piece of shit
>>110420056
Hahaha! You so silly, anon.
>>110420051
I'd probably check out the learn Japanese threads. I haven't looked at them in a while, but I recall there being some good resources in there.
I started by taking classes, which I guess can be a bit slower to get into it, but it was nice learning with a native speaker.
>>110420139
Those 90s expressions, so retro! xD
Lupin the Third
Should I watch the anime or read the manga?
I like the humor but don't know how to go about it.
>>110413858
You realize you can't watch something for the first time and have proper nostalgia experience, right?
>>110420223
Never read the manga, but the first series is a lot of fun and the blu-rays look great.
