Is anyone watching this? The fact that the show is based around a high-tech made-up sport is kind of a huge turn off for me. And if the club is so unpopular, why is literally everyone in the school willing to stop what they're doing to set up a race course for four fucking people?

reread aku no hana yesterday, and I do not know what about it is so enticing, but it is literally the best manga I have ever read. now that I am done I am left empty inside.

I would choose the latter
I like to see the second half of the story as the MC growing up, coming to terms with his past and accepting his new life, so I am glad he moved on and stayed with Aya. That being said the second-to-last chapter, the one with the dream, offers different interpretations: according to some it could mean the MC starts pursuing "madness" again; it's still puzzling me.
