What does /3/ think of 3D Coat?

just tell me why you silly bastard
>>

It's ok but you cant make porn with it.

he took that part out of the EULA

It's a fairly capable program at a nice price point for individual artists. ZBrush still has 3dc beat in the sculpting department but only by a hair - i read the devs are working on including some critical tools in the next updates, like sculpt layers.

Painting wise 3dc is very good, besides having all the modern texturing tools that for example substance and mari offer, the pbr viewport preview is extremely accurate

Yeah I am thinking about using it as my main sculpting, painting, and retopo software. I've seen people saying that they reotopo tools are so good that even if they don't use 3DC for sculpting and painting, they still use it for retopoing.

I like it. It has a pretty intuitive interface. I was able to pick a lot of it up within just 15 minutes playing around with it. Then I watched a couple five minute tutorial videos and I was up and running.

The paint room is fantastic. Retopo is very easy too. The non-commercial license is only $100 so it's pretty affordable too.

So, someone is eventually going to come in here and say some silly shit like "but the forms it makes are doughy" or "you can't make highly defined meshes with it." They are wrong, and just don't know how to use the program properly.

Modeling brushes work in both voxel mode and surface mode. If you are getting 'doughy' forms, you are using the voxel mode to try to do high detail. Stop being stupid.

How is the viewport speed compared to Mari and SP? I have an I7 and an old GTX660, in SP when i paint with 4K textures it lags so much its basicly unusable.

shit-tier

I don't know about the specs of your machine but there's no lag on my HP laptop which is what I work on.

What the fuck are you supposed to do with a non-commercial license? Maya gives the educational license for free. Houdini has an apprentice tier.

If you can't use the program for anything, why pay money for it?

I'm strictly a hobbyist. I like making stuff and giving it away on ShareCG just for fun. I got into 3D just as a way of making reference images for 2D illustrations but then discovered that 3D modelling is fun. I already make enough money doing what I do for a living and modelling stuff is a great stress reliever.

I'm not big on texturing or rendering though so 3DCoat helps make the texturing process easier. And it's fun for me to see what other people do with the assets I make.

I used to like kit bashing physical models when I was a little kid and 3D is a hell of a lot cheaper way to make models than physical models. Plus I'm not constrained by the limitations of the real world.

Not everyone in 3D wants to do 3D for a living. Some like to do it just because its fun.
>>
I use it to paint textures every day at work. I've spent ~2500 hours using it. There are some little annoyances here and there but overall I think it's a really great program.

3d-coat also has an educational version which is free. And a trial version if you're not a student which is also free.
>>
>>514211
I think that's the "indie" licence. It's basically super cheap if you're not in a big business. You can still make money off it
>>
I only use it for UVs, which I think it does really well, or at least as well as other real-time-unwrap programs I've seen. After setting all my seams and unwrapping, I export back to Maya and finish my UV layouts there.
>>
Can't wait for the Quad Fill tool to come out.

This is inaccurate. The $99 license is specifically non-commercial.
