Quixel is a texturing suite and Megascans is a material library. So, obviously the textures were scanned. But were the models?

It does if you're trying to judge the MODELING ability of the person, and not the quality of the model itself. Usually that's the case, wanting to know if you should be impressed that someone made a certain thing for basically scratch, or whether a computer fucking did it all by doing a full scan.
Megascans doesn't do geometry, it's just surface maps for different things. Like the texture of a bunch of leaf surfaces or some clear dirt without other stuff in it. These megascans are then layered to create environments with more life.

I don't think it went down quit like that. Notice how its his right hand that is the one they kept. The hand you shake with, the hand you typically wave with, the hand he probably writes with. I think they wanted to give him a more human touch, quit literally.

Honestly, I find Runescape models appropriate. The low polygon count really conserves space, which is important for MMOs.
